Exposed Aggregate Softening Solutions

Exposed Aggregate.

The common method used to expose aggregate in cement is by water washing. Water is used to remove the cement at the surface by flushing the surface with water soon after the concrete has stiffened, exposing the aggregate. Generally, this technique is used when the goal is to expose up to a third of the aggregate.

The exposed aggregate has a rough texture with some sharp edges which is not ideal to walk on, that’s where honing comes in.

We hone exposed aggregate,  removing any sharp edges.

After the concrete has set and the aggregate is revealed, we remove any rough, sharp edges using a process called honing.

The honing process involves grinding down the surface until it becomes flat and smooth, making it comfortable to walk on, but still retaining the non-slip surface.

No more cuts and abrasions.

Having your exposed aggregate honed down removes any sharp, jagged edges making it safe for families and children. We hone the sharp / jagged edges just enough to make it safe and comfortable to walk on and still retain a non-slip surface finish.

Honed Aggregate is smooth, non-slip & safe to walk on.

It’s all about the finish! Exposed aggregate and honed aggregate are made of the same materials however, exposed aggregate is very coarse as the stones within the concrete protrude on the top of the concrete layer.

Honed aggregate however is ground down so it feels smooth and comfortable to walk on, barefoot, which makes it much safer for children.
